Security Flaw in Linux XFS Filesystem: A Decade-Old Vulnerability Uncovered

The discovery of a significant vulnerability in the Linux XFS filesystem raises concerns across the tech world. The flaw, which has persisted for over a decade, could allow an unprivileged local user to gain full root access on affected systems. This vulnerability, known as RefluXFS, primarily impacts enterprise Linux deployments, posing a serious threat to the operational integrity and security of countless servers worldwide.

The Mechanics of the RefluXFS Vulnerability

The issue at hand originates from a race condition in how the XFS filesystem handles copy-on-write operations for reflinked files. In essence, when two files share the same storage block, a new block should be allocated before any modification. However, a flaw in the process permits concurrent writes, leading to unintended modifications of the original file. This race condition allows an attacker to overwrite any readable file on an XFS volume at the block layer, bypassing standard write protections.

“Exploitation is highly reliable and leaves no kernel log output,” stated Saeed Abbasi, head of Qualys TRU.

This vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-64600, affects Linux kernels from version 4.11 onward, particularly when the XFS feature reflink is enabled. The flaw, which has been present since 2017, was only recently patched, leaving millions of systems potentially exposed.

Widespread Impact Across Linux Distributions

The ramifications of this vulnerability are extensive, given its presence in major Linux distributions, including RHEL, CentOS, Oracle Linux, and more. With over 16.4 million systems potentially affected, the need for immediate action is critical. This vulnerability underscores the importance of vigilance in maintaining and updating system security protocols.

Traditional kernel hardening practices, such as Kernel Address Space Layout Randomization (KASLR) and Supervisor Mode Access Prevention (SMAP), fall short in defending against this exploit, highlighting a gap in existing security measures.
